Domain Name System

Overview

The Domain Name System ( in short we call it the DNS) is the way that Internet domain names are located and translated into Internet Protocol addresses( IP addresses). A domain name is an easy-to-remember and meaningful  “handle” for an Internet address.

The IP address assigned to a computer system like a web server on the Internet is a 32-bit number unique to each computer. It is not easy to remember such a number especially when you have to deal with many computers. Domain Name System (DNS) is a mechanism that assigns an easy-to-remember name to an IP address.

Each domain corresponds to a unique numeric IP address. The user might be connecting to an address like www.testingdocs.com but as far as the Internet is concerned, it is connecting to the web server with an IP address associated with that domain name.

The DNS server within close geographic proximity to the internet access provider maps the domain names in the web requests or forwards them to other servers on the Internet.

DNS components

The DNS is implemented as Domain Name Server that automatically converts domain name addresses into IP addresses. DNS is distributed database and portable. Even if IP addresses change, the domain name may remain the same.

Domain names are composed based on the basis of organization type or geographic locations. For example the following domain name

apple.com – where .com indicates that Apple, Inc is a commercial organization.
