End-to-End Testing

Overview

Let’s learn about End-to-End Testing in this tutorial. End-to-end testing, also called chain testing, examines the entire software product from the start to the end to ensure all integrated elements work together as expected.

End-To-End Testing

End-to-end testing, or E2E Testing, is a methodology used to verify if an application works as intended from start to finish. Typically, it’s done in an environment that simulates the real-world production environment. In E2E testing, the application’s entire flow is tested from start to end.

The main objective of end-to-end testing is to test the application flow from start to end and verify that it meets the user’s expectations and requirements. End-to-end testing involves testing the entire software system, including the user interface, business logic, database, network, and other external interfaces or services.

E2E Approach

The End-to-End Testing Approach defines the overall testing scope and logistics to be covered during the End-to-End Testing Phase. It defines the approach that will adequately verify and validate that the application meets its design specifications and acceptance criteria and performs per expected operational requirements.

E2E Testing Methods

End-to-end testing can be done manually or using automated tools. Manual end-to-end testing requires much time, effort, and resources, as it involves executing multiple test cases across different platforms and environments. On the other hand, automated end-to-end testing can save time, cost, and human errors by using scripts or tools that can perform the test cases faster and more accurately.

E2E Test Plan

Creating an end-to-end test plan involves defining a strategy that covers the entire application workflow from start to end, ensuring that all components and integrated systems work together as expected.

The scope of the E2E testing is all sub-systems, network dependencies, services, and databases.

E2E Testing Tools

It can become quite an overhead if done manually and if your application has many integrations, interactions/pages to test.

Some automation  tools for end-to-end testing are as follows:

End-to-end testing helps ensure the application behaves as expected and can handle real-world scenarios, including errors and data integrity. It’s typically one of the final phases in the testing process before the software is delivered to the end user.
