Overview

A URL ( Uniform Resource Locator) is a formatted string address of a resource on the Web.  It is used by applications like web browsers, email clients, and other software to identify a network resource on the Internet.

URL Format

Let’s understand the URL format with an example. For example, the address of the Google website is in the following format:

http://www.google.com

https://www.google.com

• http or https stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. ( s stands for secure)
• www stands for world wide web.
• google in the URL example stands for the domain name. The name of the company is Google. This can be any easy-to-remember name that allows users to type in the URL in the browser address bar
• .com is the type of domain.

 

Domain organization types

Some common domain extensions and organization types are as follows:

.com	Commercial company. Website of a commercial company that sells products, services, etc.
.edu	Educational institution. Website of an educational institution like a university, school, etc.
.mil	Military website
.org	Non-profit organization
.gov	A government website that contains information about different government services to the citizens.
