Differences between Intranet and Internet

In this tutorial, we will learn the differences between the Intranet and the Internet. Although both terms look similar, there are several differences. Let’s first learn both terms.

Internet

The Internet is the worldwide, publicly accessible system of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protocol (IP).

It is an interconnection of several diverse computer networks. It consists of several separate, incompatible computer networks that differ in many ways. They use different data formats, computer software, and various hardware devices.

The Internet consists of a large number of smaller businesses,
academic, domestic, and government networks, which together carry various internet services, such as e-mail(Electronic Mail), interlinked Webpages, online chat, and other documents of the WWW( World Wide Web).

The Internet allows communication between people who use different and incompatible computer networks. Using the Internet any person anywhere in the world can access your information.

Intranet

An intranet is a small private computer network that uses Internet protocols, and network connectivity, inside a company that allows employees to access the company’s information resources and collaborate together.

Intranet vs Internet

Some of the differences between the Intranet and the Internet are as follows:

Intranet	Internet
An intranet is a private network. Only authorized users and employees can access the computer network.	The Internet is a public network. Anybody with an internet connection can access it.
It is protected with a VPN and is secured with a firewall.	Doesn’t require a VPN. However, we can still use a VPN for online privacy.
Intranet networks are safe and can host confidential business documents and information.	The Internet is not safe. Confidential documents cannot be stored on the Internet.
Accessing information is slow.	Accessing information is fast.
The Intranet can be WAN or MAN or LAN.	Internet is an example of WAN.
