Differences between ISO and CMM?

ISO

ISO is the International Organization for Standardization. Because different languages would have different abbreviations.

  • English -> IOS for International Organization for Standardization
  • French -> OIN for Organisation internationale de normalisation

It was decided to use a word derived from the Greek iso, meaning “equal”. Therefore, whatever the country or language, the short form of the organization’s name is always ISO.

ISO is a non-governmental organization with the mission of promoting the development of standardization and related activities in the world to facilitate the international exchange of goods and services and to develop cooperation in the spheres of intellectual, scientific, technological, and economic activity. It was established in 1947.

CMM

CMM: The Capability Maturity Model for Software(CMM Or SW-CMM) is an industry-standard model for defining and measuring the maturity of a software company’s development process and providing directions on improving their software Quality. The Software Engineering Institute( SEI ) developed it under the direction of the U.S. Department of Defence.

ISO vs CMM

Some of the differences between ISO and CMM are as follows:

ISO Standards CMM
ISO started as a European standard. is the creation of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), a Swiss-based federation of national standards bodies. CMM is an American standard. Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute (SEI) created CMM.
ISO is designed to put quality into the manufacturing process. CMM was designed to ensure bug-free development.
ISO 9001 and the whole ISO process approach software from a manufacturing standpoint CMM approaches it from a development standpoint
ISO standards are very loose. ISO does not say you have to meet or follow certain standards. CMM standards are more stringent than ISO standards. CMM says you must meet these standards.
