In any computer network, devices need an IP address to communicate with each other. Manually assigning IP addresses to every device on a network can be time-consuming and error-prone. What is DHCP?
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a network management protocol used to automate the process of configuring devices on IP networks. DHCP assigns an IP address and other network configuration parameters to each device on a network so they can communicate with other IP networks.
How DHCP Works?
DHCP operates based on a client-server model. DHCP works using a four-step process commonly known as DORA:
- Discovery: When a device (DHCP client) connects to a network, it broadcasts a DHCP Discover message to locate available DHCP servers.
- Offer: A DHCP server responds with a DHCP Offer message, offering an IP address and other network settings.
- Request: The client replies with a DHCP Request message, indicating that it accepts the offer from one specific DHCP server.
- Acknowledgment: The DHCP server sends a DHCP Acknowledgment (ACK), confirming that the IP address has been assigned to the client.
This entire process happens automatically, allowing the device to quickly and seamlessly connect to the network.
