What is a Java Class?
Overview
Let’s learn about a Java Class to answer the question.
Java Class
A Java class is a blueprint or prototype that defines the variables and the methods that are common to all objects of a certain kind.
Java class template
[access level] class (Name of the class)
{
Class definition: members and methods
…
}
The class header consists of the access level, the keyword “class” and the name of the class.
The class body consists of a pair of open and closed curly braces. In the class body, we can define the class members like variables and methods.
Class members
Class members are:
- Variables
- Methods
Variables
Variables can be instance variables and class variables.
Instance variables are also called fields, properties, etc. A field is the property of the class or object which we are going to create.
Method
Methods are also called functions. A method is a set of tasks/operations that an object can perform. It defines the behavior of the object and how the object can interact with the outside world.
Access Level of members: Access level is where we can use the members of the class. Each variable and method has an access level:
- public: accessible everywhere this class is available
- private: accessible only inside the class
- package or default: accessible only in the package
- protected: accessible only in this package and in all subclasses of the class
