About ISO
ISO is the International Organization for Standardization. Because different languages would have different abbreviations.
- English -> IOS for International Organization for Standardization
- French -> OIN for Organisation internationale de normalisation
It was decided to use a word derived from the Greek iso, meaning “equal”. Therefore, whatever the country or language, the short form of the organization’s name is always ISO.
ISO is a non-governmental organization with the mission of promoting the development of standardization and related activities in the world to facilitate the international exchange of goods and services and to develop cooperation in the spheres of intellectual, scientific, technological, and economic activity. It was established in 1947.
ISO 9001:2000 Standard
The new edition has combined 1994 editions of ISO 9001, ISO 9002, and ISO 9003. The existing ISO9001/ISO9002/ISO9003 standards will be replaced by the revised International Standard (ISO 9001:2000). Once the ISO 9001:2000 standard is issued, all registered/certified organizations will have three years to comply with the new standard.
To be ISO 9001 certified, a third-party auditor assesses the organization, and certification is typically good for about 3 years, after which a complete reassessment is required.
The new standard emphasizes continual improvement and customer satisfaction more than the 1994 versions. It applies to the processes of an organization that influence quality.
The major clauses in the new standard are as follows:
- Quality Management System
- Management Responsibility
- Resource Management
- Product Realisation
- Measurement, Analysis, and Improvement
