MySQL

MySQL Database Features

Overview

In this tutorial, we will learn about MySQL Database Features. MySQL is a Relational Database Management System( RDBMS). MySQL is the world’s most popular open-source database.

MySQL provides various editions of RDBMS. MySQL is a family of high performance database servers, tools.

MySQL Founders

MySQL was founded by MySQL AB a Swedish company. MySQL founders are:

  • David Axmark
  • Allan Larsson
  • Micheal Monty Widenius

MySQL was bought by Sun Microsystems. In 2010, Oracle Corporation acquired Sun Microsystems.
MySQL was also forked to the MariaDB database.

MySQL Features

Some of the features and benefits of using MySQL database are as follows:

  • Open Source
  • Scalability
  • High Performance
  • Cross Platform
  • Transaction Support
  • High Availability
  • Security
  • Ease of Management
  • Low TCO( Total Cost of Ownership)

Open Source

MySQL community edition is open-source and free to use. Free as in Freedom. MySQL is a strong supporter of open source community.

Scalability

MySQL is suitable for building mission critical, high volume products and applications. MySQL is capable to handle massive database workload. MySQL Cluster automatically partitions tables across nodes, enabling databases to scale horizontally, and serve read and write-intensive workloads, etc.

High Performance

MySQL offers excellent performance that meets most performance requirements of any database system. Full text indexes, memory caches and high speed load utilities. MySQL supports high performance query engine. It supports fast data inserts, B-tree and hash indexes.

Cross Platform

MySQL is cross platform compatible. MySQL supports many operating systems like Windows, UNIX, various distributions of Linux.

Transaction Support

MySQL supports ACID and distributed transaction capabilities. ACID acronym stands for Atomic, Consistent, Isolated and Durable. MySQL supports unlimited Row-level locking, server enforced referential integrity. MySQL offers specialized transaction isolation levels and instant deadlock detection.

High Availability

MySQL supports high speed master/slave replication configurations. This will guarantee high availability of the database system around the clock uptime.  Cluster servers offer instant failover configuration.

Security

MySQL provides exceptional security features to protect database data. MySQL supports SSH and SSL(Secure Socket Layer) protocol. MySQL has powerful data encryption and decryption utilities. It also provides granular object privilege framework.

Ease of Management

MySQL is easy to use and reliable database management system. It provides graphical tools for database management, migration, etc. MySQL provides dynamic configuration and automatic space expansion.

MySQL supports complete logical backup and physical backup. Full and point-in-time recovery.
