Linux Directories

Overview

In this tutorial, we will learn and understand Linux directories. A Linux directory is a file that contains directory entries. It may contain files, and may also contain subdirectories. In Microsoft Windows terminology a directory is called a folder.

Root Directory

Linux File System is a hierarchical file system. The top-level directory of the file system tree is called the root directory.

 

Linux Directories

Working Directory

Every process in Linux has a working directory, also called the current or present working directory.

Home Directory

When a user logs in, the current working directory is set to the home directory.
